The DISH Radio Network helps close the education divide in communities in Lesser-Developed Countries. The network was established by Humanitus Foundation which is headquartered in Nakasero, Uganda. The main studio uplinks a live audio feed 24/7 to a satellite which, in turn, footprints across much of the globe. The DISH network has affiliates in Africa, Europe, Greater Asia and the Pacific region.
Our primary languages for broadcasting are English, Kiswahili and French. If there is sufficient demand, other languages are used in our block programming.
In addition to producing our own programmes, we work in close conjunction with media outlets, farmers' organisations, content providers such as OneWorld, MediaChannel, World Radio News, individuals and member-stations. They all help create a greater audience and awareness of issues by contributing to the DISH Radio Network audio pool.
Radio stations fitted with a satellite receiver system take the DISH audio signal and re-broadcast it live on their individual FM stations. Member-stations can take DISH audio on demand by switching the satellite audio 'on' and 'off' as required. This allows stations which would otherwise go off-air overnight or for other regular periods to continue to broadcast. Alternatively, the stations can choose to re-broadcast DISH news programmes, select documentaries to broadcast, accept the audio in blocks or take programmes which meet their community's specific needs.
In most instances member stations receive at least two weeks notice of particular programmes, their duration and other relevant details. This allows stations to know in advance what topics will be covered at a particular time. Other segments such as the 'Farming Hour' and 'NGO Update' are broadcast at the same time, each day.
DISH Radio Network, through Humanitus Foundation, works alongside organisations such as Teachers Without Borders to create educational programmes aimed specifically at youth who cannot attend school. In some instances, depending on a station's location, we can assist a member station become self-funded.
The DISH Radio Network broadcasts information on topics tailored towards the needs of its listeners. Among the topics are HIV/AIDS, other health issues, good governance, human rights, agriculture, aquaculture, women and youth issues, education, appropriate technology, rural diversification, conflict resolution, relevant technology and the rights of individuals.
The DISH Radio Network, Humanitus Foundation and our affiliates are all committed to empowerment through education. As such, our staff and consultants include medicos, agriculturalists, teachers, experts in technology, engineers, broadcasters, producers and technicians. By doing so we are assured of providing radio material that meets the needs of local communities.
We welcome enquiries from any existing station as well as communities which are considering establishing their own station. As an NGO, we keep the cost of member-stations as low as possible. If you would like to know more about the DISH Radio Network, please contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
